About PinPonder

PinPonder is a free geography guessing game played in a browser: a real photograph, a map and your best guess about where the camera was standing.

Looking closely at real places

Guessing a place from a photograph is an old way to learn to look closely. A road sign in an unexpected language, a house number, the shape of a roof, the direction of a shadow — the answer is usually already in the frame, waiting to be noticed.

PinPonder turns that into a game you can start in one click. You open the page, you get a real photograph, and the only thing being tested is your attention.

Round by round the habit adds up: plates, plants, poles and architecture start to read like a map of where you are.

Where the photographs come from

Playable rounds use real photographs shared through Panoramax. Photos are prepared for browser viewing, with creator credits, licensing details and source links available in Photo credits inside the game.

Creator attribution is preserved. Each scene is credited inside the game through a Photo credits control, and that control is also why the game asks before it opens.

Opening the credits can reveal the answer

Photo credits name the contributor and the source photograph, which is often enough to work out where you are standing. Opening them is always voluntary and the game warns you first — but if you want a clean guess, read them once your pin is placed.

What is generated

The expedition artwork on this site — the hero illustration, the kit, the emblem and the social card — is generated promotional artwork. It is fictional and decorative: never shown as a clue during a round, and never evidence of where anything is.

The photographs in the game are real images of real places, taken by real people, and the reveal after each guess shows you where the camera actually stood.

The current preview

The current build is a free solo preview. One game is five rounds, each in a distinct area drawn from a finite preview catalogue of 18 reviewed sample areas: 109 real panoramas from 16 countries across five continents, not worldwide coverage. Free play prefers the areas you have played least recently, and avoids reopening on the previous game’s opening photograph when there is an alternative. You choose one optional timer of 30, 60, 90 or 180 seconds per round, or none, and it stays fixed for the whole game.

Progress, badges and settings are saved in this browser. Nothing is uploaded while you play, and Privacy and storage explains what is kept and how to remove it.
